Artwork review is the point where a visual idea becomes a manufacturing brief. A polished presentation image can communicate the concept, but production also depends on dimensions, metal areas, color boundaries, attachments and the appearance required on both sides of the item.

The most useful submission is not necessarily the most elaborate file. It is the one that makes the intended result clear and separates confirmed requirements from details that still need manufacturing input.

Define the product before refining the artwork

Start by naming the item and its use: lapel pin, badge, medal, keychain, ornament, bottle opener or another format. The same graphic may need different line weights, attachments and edge treatment when it moves from a small pin to a larger functional product.

Include the intended overall size and note whether that measurement refers to width, height or the longest dimension. If the product must fit packaging, a uniform, a keyring or a display card, provide those practical limits as part of the brief.

Send the clearest artwork available

Vector artwork is helpful because shapes and colors can be reviewed without losing detail. When vector files are not available, a high-resolution image, approved rendering, sketch or physical reference can still start the discussion. Avoid relying on a small screenshot when fine text or narrow lines are important.

Mark any element that must remain unchanged, such as a logo proportion, registered mark, character expression or specific type treatment. If the artwork contains licensed or protected content, the buyer remains responsible for having the required rights and approvals for production.

Identify relief, color and open areas

A manufacturing drawing needs to distinguish raised metal, recessed detail, filled color, printed detail and any open or cut-out area. Those choices affect tooling and the way the finished item catches light. A flat illustration does not always show which boundaries should become metal lines.

Use color references where color matching matters, while allowing for the visual difference between a screen and physical enamel or printed decoration. Very small isolated color areas, narrow gaps and tiny text should be reviewed before tooling rather than assumed to reproduce unchanged.

Show the back and attachment

The reverse side is part of the product specification. State whether it needs a plain surface, texture, recessed logo, raised mark, date, numbering or another treatment. The position of posts, loops, rings, clips, magnets or other fittings should be considered alongside the front artwork.

For functional products, keep working zones clear. Bottle-opener edges, clips, hinges, hooks and moving components cannot be treated as decoration-only areas. A reference photo or simple marked diagram is often enough to explain how the item should be worn, hung, opened or displayed.

Separate confirmed details from open options

A useful brief states which decisions are fixed and which may be recommended after review. For example, the size and logo may be approved while plating, enamel method, thickness or packing remains open. This prevents an early assumption from becoming an unintended specification.

If several versions belong to one collection, provide a master direction and clearly label the variation in each design. Consistent naming reduces confusion when artwork revisions, samples and packing files are exchanged.

Review the production drawing before tooling

Before tooling begins, review the production drawing as a specification rather than as a presentation image. Check dimensions, spelling, orientation, colors, plating direction, attachment position and back details. Ask questions wherever the drawing does not match the intended use.

Keep the approved version with the inquiry and order record. When a change is required, identify it by version and confirm whether it affects only the artwork or also the tooling, finish, attachment or packaging. A controlled approval stage is the simplest way to reduce avoidable rework.
