Buyers often begin with a process name, but the better starting point is the required product. Geometry, relief, thickness, strength, surface appearance, moving parts and packing all influence the manufacturing route.
A route should be selected after the artwork and use scenario are reviewed together. Similar-looking items can require different construction when one is decorative, another carries load and a third includes a functional mechanism.
Start with geometry and function
Flat products with defined outlines and surface relief are reviewed differently from thick three-dimensional forms. A pin, coin or medal may prioritize crisp front detail, while a bottle opener, hook or clip must also preserve working geometry and handling areas.
Provide the intended use, approximate dimensions and any load, movement or installation requirement. These details help separate decorative expectations from functional requirements before tooling is discussed.

When stamping is considered
Stamping is commonly reviewed for relatively flat metal pieces where the outline, relief and surface treatment can be formed from sheet or strip material. Pins, badges, medals and some flat accessories may fit this route, depending on their detail and construction.
The artwork still needs a tooling review. Deep relief, very thick sections, complicated side detail or integrated three-dimensional forms may point toward another process or a combined construction.
When die casting is considered
Die casting may be considered for thicker, more sculpted or three-dimensional forms and for products with integrated structural features. The process can support shapes that are difficult to create from a flat stamped blank, but tool design, parting lines and finishing access still require review.
Do not choose die casting only because an image looks detailed. The required depth, edge profile, back construction, attachment and expected surface are more useful decision factors than the amount of color in the artwork.
Fabrication and mixed construction
Metal hooks, brackets, display pieces and other functional products can combine cutting, forming, welding, hardware and coating. A decorative face may also be joined to a separate clip, ring, frame or mechanism. In these cases, the assembly is the product specification, not only the visible artwork.
Ask for the connection points, hardware, finish transitions and packing protection to be reviewed as one system. A mixed construction can be appropriate when each component has a clear purpose and the final assembly can be inspected consistently.

Match decoration to the base process
Enamel, plating, printing, polishing and surface texture are finishing decisions built on the underlying metal construction. The available recessed areas, edges, holes and relief influence where color or polishing can be applied cleanly.
Discuss the target appearance after the base geometry is understood. A method that works well on a broad flat field may not suit a narrow curved surface, a working edge or a deeply recessed area.
Compare routes against the complete brief
When more than one route is feasible, compare them against the same criteria: visual result, function, tooling approach, repeatability, quantity, schedule and packing. Request clarification on the trade-offs that materially affect the product rather than comparing process names in isolation.
The final route should be recorded in the approved drawing and sample requirements. If the artwork or dimensions change, confirm whether the selected route remains suitable before proceeding.
